Netflix is cutting roughly a thousand jobs and replacing the executive who oversaw its global programming. The audience, naturally, is still expected to keep watching.

The people losing their jobs get the immediate consequence. The people deciding what Netflix should become get a new executive.
On October 14, Reuters reported that Netflix was cutting approximately 6% of its workforce, around 1,000 jobs, with reductions affecting product, technology, legal and human resources. The company told employees it was prioritizing resources even as it maintained its business remained strong.[2]
On October 15, Netflix announced that Bela Bajaria would leave after nearly a decade, and Peter Rice would become chief content officer on October 26. Rice will oversee global series, films and live events. The announcement credits Bajaria with helping expand the service into unscripted programming, sports and live events.[1]
Those are two separate management decisions, not evidence that Bajaria caused the layoffs. The sequence still makes a useful picture of the incentives: a company can say its fundamentals are strong, cut a thousand positions, and swap the person at the top of the content organization inside forty-eight hours. Shareholders get a turnaround story. Staff get a much more literal exit strategy.
The competitive pressure is real. Streaming is fighting for attention against free video, social platforms and live programming, while expensive shows and sports rights keep demanding cash. A new content chief might improve commissioning and execution. Or the organization might discover that moving one very expensive chair doesn't fix the economics underneath it. That's a question, not a proven outcome.
The accountability test: Which decision would demonstrate a genuine strategy change: a more disciplined slate, a different distribution model, or measurable improvements in viewing and retention? And how should management explain why workers pay first?
