Requested: aircraft and counter-drone protection. Delivered: no announced package identified in the reporting reviewed. There is a sizable stretch of water between those two columns.
Bulgaria’s defence minister Dimitar Stoyanov said on October 16 that the country had formally asked NATO for combat and patrol aircraft, air-defence missile systems and counter-drone capabilities after attacks on Black Sea commercial shipping. Radio Bulgaria reports that Sofia was still awaiting an answer on what assistance it would receive.[1][2]
The new development is the formal capabilities request, not another retelling of the ship attacks. Our earlier coverage dealt with the casualty picture and proposed escort arrangements. A request for allied equipment is a distinct step; it is still not an operating protective shield.
Who decides next?
In Reuters’ updated account, a NATO official said ambassadors from the alliance’s 32 members would discuss the issue the following week. NATO’s own record confirms Mark Rutte met Bulgaria’s prime minister and Romania’s president in Brussels on October 15. A meeting photograph, however, is not an aircraft arrival notice.[1][3]
What remains blank?
The reporting reviewed identifies no supplying countries, aircraft models, quantities or arrival dates for this request. Bulgaria is awaiting a decision. Do not promote that uncertainty into either “NATO has deployed” or the broader claim that no approval could exist anywhere behind closed doors.[1][2]
Our read: the useful next communiqué would name the assets, the operating timetable and what shipping crews can actually rely on. Until then, viddy the paperwork without mistaking it for air cover. The request is concrete. The shield is not yet a verified delivery.

Reuters reported LPG departures and a separate jet-fuel delivery despite the blockade. The U.S. disputes treating every passage as evasion. Both findings belong in the ledger.
