Bessent’s AI crisis line is still a proposal

A new Axios interview puts shared AI risks back on the table. An agreed, working U.S.–China hotline is another question.

Has anyone connected the line?

Not established by the reporting. In an Axios interview published October 3, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he plans to propose a U.S.–China notification process for AI incidents and thinks Beijing would agree. That leaves some rather consequential verbs unfinished, droogies.[1]

What would they be talking about?

Bessent said his discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng covered uncontrolled AI agents and non-state actors using the technology for cyber or biological threats.[1]

Is the idea new today?

Axios had already reported the notification proposal on September 21. Today’s interview adds Bessent’s latest account.[2]

On September 22, Axios noted that public criteria for triggering the channel were undefined.[3]

And if a lab cannot keep control?

Asked about executives warning they could lose control of powerful models, Bessent told Axios: “Well, then they should slow down.” He also called for more attention to resilience and defense.[1]

A sensible number to have in the address book, if they agree how to use it. Until then, keep your gulliver clear: a proposal still needs willing callers, rules and somebody who picks up.
